Why Charter Schools?

Every child learns differently. Charter schools give families the freedom to choose a public school that best fits their student’s needs offering innovation, accountability, and diverse options while remaining

tuition-free and open to all.

What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are public schools — free to attend, open to all students, and funded by taxpayers. Unlike traditional district schools, charters operate under a performance “charter” or contract with an authorizer (a local school district or the state’s Charter School Institute).

This contract gives them more flexibility in curriculum, staffing, and school design in exchange for stronger accountability for results. If a charter school doesn’t meet performance standards, it can be closed — a level of accountability that sets them apart from many traditional public schools.

Educational
Fit

Families can choose a school model (classical, STEM, arts, project-based, etc.) that best matches their child’s needs.

A

Yes. Charter schools are tuition-free, publicly funded, and open to all students. They are part of Colorado’s public school system.

Q

How are charter schools held accountable?

A

Each charter school operates under a contract (or “charter”) with an authorizer — either a local school district or the state Charter School Institute. If a school doesn’t meet performance, financial, or governance standards, it can be closed.

Q

Why do parents choose charter schools?

A

Parents often choose charters because of their unique educational approaches, smaller learning communities, strong academics, or school cultures that align with their family’s values.

Q

Do charter schools charge tuition?

A

No. Charter schools are free to attend. Just like traditional public schools, they receive funding from the state based on student enrollment.

Q

Who can attend a charter school?

A

Any student can attend. Families typically apply through a lottery system when demand is higher than available seats.

Q

Do charter schools serve all students?

A

Yes. Charter schools serve students from all backgrounds and are required to follow the same federal and state laws regarding access, equity, and nondiscrimination as other public schools.
