History of Charter Schools

Charter schools are a relatively young part of America’s education system, but in just over three decades they have become a powerful force for innovation, accountability, and family choice. What started as a single law in Minnesota has grown into a nationwide movement serving millions of students — including more than 130,000 here in Colorado.

1991 - First Charter School Law (U.S.)

Minnesota passes the nation’s first charter school law, laying the foundation for a new kind of public school with more flexibility and accountability.

Why This History Matters

Charter schools were created to expand opportunity, encourage innovation, and empower families. In Colorado, they have become a trusted option for parents who want schools that reflect their values and meet their children’s needs.

As education continues to evolve, understanding where charter schools came from helps us see where they are headed: as a vital, permanent part of Colorado’s public education landscape.
